AirAsia Cadet Pilot Journey

AirAsia Malaysia Cadet Pilot

Introduction

This is a summarised documented journey of AirAsia's Cadet Pilot assessment & selection process.

The purpose of this blog is to provide future aspiring cadet pilots a reference for the upcoming cadet pilot opening by AirAsia Malaysia. (It may vary from airline to airline & subject to airline*)

To ensure equal effort are being contributed by each and every candidate, this blog will not provide any spoon feeding. This blog is just for your guidance to prepare yourself mentally for the upcoming cadet pilot programme opening. (Success is preceded by hard work & self-effort)

Where it all began
Before applying, please ensure that all criteria's are met as per the reference published by the airline & the local aviation authority. Some academically proficient candidates who applied are selected but does not meet the health standards acquired by the local aviation authority will be dropped out of the programme. Therefore, it is essential to refer to the necessary related reference to prevent future disappointment.

Your selection will be reviewed based upon your qualifications & the airlines' criteria.

Be patient and wait for the invitation e-mail to come within one to two weeks (depending on candidates). Expect not to receive the e-mail if you applied without complying with their requirements.

Stage 1 - Academic Assessment (Entry Exam)

This is similar to the government examination based on SPM syllabus. This assessment comprises of 3 subjects (20-25 questions depending on subject)  with a passing percentage of 75. Please be advised that only multiple choice questions are applicable in this assessment and an average duration of 40 minutes per paper.

1) English (Based on MUET examination standards)
2) Mathematics (SPM Syllabus)
3) Physics (SPM Syllabus)

Standard examination rules apply*

Stage 2 - Personality & Psychological Assessment

This assessment will be conducted by the representatives from Harrison Assessment Malaysia on behalf of AirAsia.

This computer based assessment will invigilate an individuals' characteristics based on the career suitability between the candidate and the chosen profession (Pilot). I will not disclose the exact information for this assessment as it only relies on your true self when performing the assessment(Honesty).

Stage 3 - Interview

A face to face interview will be conducted by a couple of human resource representative together with the head of pilot recruitment whom is a captain himself. Be an organised individual by preparing yourself ahead of the interview day. Your form of self-presentation and the organisation of documents to be presented reflects upon yourself towards the interviewing members.

Basic Interview Skills:
1) Answer tactfully
2) Calmness with a clear state of mind
3) Be knowledgeable about the company and your current field.

Most importantly, be knowledgeable in aviation.

To excel in your job interview (regardless of any profession), research should be done based on external sources.

Stage 4 - QCT & Psychometric Test

This will be the last assessment prior to medical test. It is the toughest assessment of all stages. Both assessments will be done on the same day or two separate days depending on the number of candidates and the availability of serviceable computers.

1) Quantitative Critical Thinking abbreviated "QCT" will be conducted by the members of Harrison Assessment Malaysia on behalf of AirAsia. This assessment will scrutinise your mathematical reasoning ability.

2) Psychometric Test will put your multitasking & multi-numerical memorising abilities to the test. The candidate must carry out four tasks in a very short time duration where response time is critical.
Little to no mistakes should ever occur in this assessment. It is similar to a simulator test but you'll be position in front of a computer together with a joystick & numeral keypad.

It is important to make yourself comfortable before proceeding with the psychometric test. During the course of the assessment, you'll be memorising various continuous numbers based on your visual & auditory senses while chasing for the flight director cue with your joystick. This is basically a hand-eye coordination test.

Just a tip: Be familiar with the aircraft's Electronic Attitude Director Indicator (EADI) also known as the Primary Flight Display (PFD).

EADI/PDF
To be fair for other candidates, I will not disclose the exact procedure of this particular assessment. A briefing on this test will be conducted before the commencement of the assessment. All candidates will be given a fair & equal chance to get themselves prepared.

Stage 5 - Medical Test

If you've made it to this stage of the selection process, Congratulations! As long as you are in the pink of health and standing taller than 163cm, you should sail through medical test smoothly. AirAsia will allocate their preferred panel doctor to medically assess their potential cadets. Do not attend to any other aviation doctors as AirAsia wants to ensure all of its cadets have gone through a stringent medical examination under a particular doctor.

Prior to medical check-up, an ophthalmology test has to be carried out. AirAsia will instruct its potential cadets on which medical center to head to.

Medical Test consists of: BMI, Blood Test, Cardiogram, Audiogram, Urine Test, Bone Structure (X-Ray), and regular miscellaneous health examinations.

Eye Test: To pass, the eye power must not exceed 500 or have any other major vision defects which may lead catastrophic consequences when performing pilot duties. Optical instruments are permitted as long as within the corrected vision of 6/6.

Stage 6 - Finance

Congratulations on passing your medical! Hats off to the 4 stages of hard work, sacrifice, & perseverance.

This is the time where a cadet has to decide on which avenue he/she decides to finance the flight training. There are 3 financing methods; Self-Sponsor, Study Loan, or Partial Study Loan. The process is tedious but AirAsia will collaborate with a selected bank to organise a finance briefing to all. The particular 'selected' bank will be their finance panel in sorting out loan application for cadets.

Remember: AirAsia does NOT financially sponsor for flight training & type-rating

Due to the ever rising cost of fuel globally, flying schools are constantly increasing their study fees annually on average. This would alter the bank's criteria for flight training loan application.

As of year 2017, the cost of flight training in both flying schools are MYR320,000 & type-rating on an Airbus A320-200 costs RM80,000. These prices are subjected to change*

Feel free to ask any questions by commenting below, I would be more than happy to provide you with the advice needed.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavour.

  1. Hey there, thank you for all these tips! Really helps me in preparing. May I ask? I am an architecture graduate with a cgpa of 3.63. I also managed to get 8A's and 1B for my SPM. An A+ for both physics and mathematics and an A for english. Though i did get a band 4 for my MUET. Do you think I qualify? and which results should I use to apply? or I can apply using both of my results just to be on the safe side.

    1. Hello Idlan! Your academic performance is highly impressive. You've potentially made yourself more marketable in the industry. In the airline, people will always look for the creme de la creme. I highly recommend you to apply in the next cadet pilot opening. During a cadet pilot opening, you should full in an online form. Please use your CGPA. If it requires both SPM and CGPA, do full in both of the particulars. The period to look out for the opening is between March & April (usually towards the 3rd quarter of March). At the same time, do visit FlyGosh.com regularly for more pilot job/position updates. I wish you all the best!

    1. Hello! It is important to ensure that your eye power doesn't exceed 500. If you're wearing corrective lenses, do ensure it is correctable to a 6/6 vision. I highly recommend you to head over to The Tun Hussein Onn national eye hospital to speak to an Aviation authority (DCA) recognised Opthalmological Medical examiner for a detailed consultation.

    1. Hello, for year 2017; AirAsia did tie up with Maybank for financial assistance. I hope for the 2018 batch, they'll be more financial options for the cadets to finance their flight training with greater ease. If you're selected for the loan briefing, you'll be notified about the ctiteria for loan application and approval. The requirements to neet the loan criteria are rather high. Please do reply here if you've got some info on the finance briefing. All the best!

  7. What do you mean by “Airasia is NOT financially sponsor for flight training"? Do we need to pay the flying by our own?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! Yes, AirAsia doesn't financially sponsor for your flight training. Instead, they do tie up with a bank for you to apply for a loan. As of 2017, Maybank is their panel. For year 2018, I'll try to source for some flight training financial infomation for you if I can. Wishing you the very best!

    2. Hello to the both of you and apologies for the super late reply as I was busy with ground studies at that time, due to licensing issues from the CAAM. Its not advisable to study outside Malaysia. There's been cases where private cadets enrol their flight training elsewhere like Australia, and when they come back to Malaysia, they'll have to fork out a fortune to convert their foreign pilot licence to a Malaysian pilot license. But MPL is a different case, even if AirAsia sends you overseas, that's because the programme structure is approved and recognised by the CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia) .

  9. which flying school they will send the cadet pilot?is it the MFA or at their own academy?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! Apologies for the super late reply, those months I was extremely busy with ground school and totally lost touch with this blog! As of 2019, there's some changes with the study plan. If AirAsia decides to enrol you into the CPL with Forzen ATPL course, you'll most likely enter MFA but not HMA as their current situation is in dire straits. If you're selected to enrol into the MPL course, you'll be enrolling into CAE Training Center in Sepang, United States (Arizona), or Australia. So as you can see, there's a change in the study plan. It's a good question! All the best!

  10. Hi, I'm having my SPM this year and I hope to join the cadet as soon as possible. May I know if I can use my SPM forecast result to apply for the cadet program? Or I have to use my formal SPM result? And may I know is there any bond with AirAsia after I've ended my flight training? And how much flying hours and what are the liscences can I get after the training? Thanks and have a great great day :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! Not to worry, AirAsia will open their cadet pilot programme after the SPM results have been released. You can't use forecast results because for you to meet the requirement set by CAAM, its reflected based on your actual SPM. There's a bond with AirAsia but I'm not sure about the duration, I've forgotten whether it is 10 or 15 years, I can't recall, sorry about that. You'll get your CPL upon completing 200 flying hours. Extremely sorry for the late reply, I wish you the very best and have a nice day too.

    1. HellocNurul! I'm sympathetic towards you, it breaks my heart to see someone not meeting the height requirement but has a such strong desire to become a pilot. I've personally seen 2 girls whom did not meet the height requirement of 163cm being escort away and the Captains feeling truly sorry that AirAsia couldn't proceed their assessment further. I hope miracle happens that God bless you to be taller and you can fulfil your ambitions! I hope to see that happen! :)

    1. Hello, sorry for the late reply as now I'm more free to look into my blog once again after completing my ground studies! MFA and HMA both have hostels and cafeteria with full meals are provided. So basically you can always walk around the flying school complex. The new flying school IATAC, it seems their cadets live somewhere else and have a shuttle bus to ferry them to the flying school. The building is currently under construction but operations have commenced a while ago.

  17. Hey, I noticed that this program isn't sponsored by AirAsia. Since cadets are required to either take study loan or self-sponsor, why are they still required to be in bond after the training?
Is there any additional cost covered by AA? If so, how much would that be?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very good question! The bond is basically a good way for the company to ensure that they do not have shortage of staffs leaving for other airlines. Every month, there's always a decrease first officer's in the company, so they need people with potential like you to fill in the spaces. If they don't bond you, you'll definitely run away if other company offer a high offer such as the airlines in China, am I right? 😂 They're strategic!

  18. Hello, may I ask you something? If I got credit (c) for mathematics and physics in SPM, will I be excepted as cadet pilot ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In any airline, they want to recruit the creme de la creme. So the stakes are high. In last years opening on the QR code, it seems that there's no selection for "C" under the Mathematics, Physics, and English box. If the SPM is letting you down, I suggest pursuing A-Levels and you work super hard there for 1 year or take up other degree/diploma programmes to boost your academic morale and try to apply for the opening in the following cadet recruitment. With some effort, you'll definitely be able to overcome the hurdles! 💪🏻

  19. What if i got b+ for my English(SPM),Do i still eligible for entering the cadet pilot?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! In becoming a pilot in Malaysia, the requirement is 5 credits. But for joining the airline as a cadet pilot, they do require a higher result requirement. Which is at least an A for Math and English, B for Physics and other 2 more subjects which can be any of the SPM subjects of which it has to be a credit or higher.

      Delete
  20. Its nice to see you taking time to answer all the questions...thanks for your dedication. You definitely cut to become a pilot...what passion you have.

Hope you can clarify this for me, how long (duration) does it take for one to become First Officer then on to be Captain. Do you fly domestic at first or any routes (Asian or International) ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! Although it's a bit of an embarrassment to reply all of your replies so late in time. Once you're in a flying school or airline, you'll tend to be so coped up with the ambition that I've literally been putting this blog on idle with all of you aspiring pilots asking me such important questions without a reply from me soon enough. But I'll try my best hahaha! Well, for your question, I should be able to provide you with an accurate answer once I'm in AirAsia upon completing my training! As of for now, many people are telling me such different answer, so I'm not sure which are the accurate answers to that. But, a junior pilot does fly both domestic and international routes for sure! Based on the rumours, some say it takes about 5 to 7 years to become Captain, which I'm not sure if its true or not. Anyway, wishing you the very best in achieving your ambition.

  21. Hi. May i know approximately how much does cadets need to pay through out the program?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For year 2019,the flying school fees in Malaysia has increased to about MYR372k, and in the airline, you still got to pay addition few tenths of thousands of ringgit to pursue your type rating training. I'm thinking the total may costs up to MYR450k or more to become a fully competent pilot in Malaysia. Really costly indeed!

    1. Hello, it's actually more common for people to pursue flight training upon completion of their SPM. But as of today, the waiting list to enter flight school in Malaysia is about 2 years due to numerous students awaiting for their intake. So I would highly recommend you to pursue something you'll like while waiting for your intake. So, it's best to sit for the flight school assessment and interview quickly in order to book a slot in the flying school soonest.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hai!! It's really good that your Maths is excellent! The airline requires a higher grades in order to process you as part of their cadet pilot programme. However, that doesn't mean your chances are detrimental, because you can enter the flying school as long as you have 5 credits in SPM. The only difference is that, you'll be seeking for a job only after your flight training or perhaps if you're lucky enough, the airline may come to the flight school to headhunt for additional future pilots. So don't give up your dream, you can enter flight school as a private cadet. Wishing you the very best in pursuing your passion!

Its okay to ask many question, don't hesitate hahaha I'm more than happy to answer it for you. For this year, the programme costs should b MYR 420K, it's much higher, really expensive. The good news is that, there's full loan for you to apply via their panel bank. The fees will cover everything inclusive of accommodation, food, courses, etc.. So don't worry and go for it.

    Hopee can explain dis further
    Thank you

    1. Hello Ain, yes indeed is actually very expensive to pursue flight training. Reason for that is that it's costs well over MYR400k to get into flight training. Let's say if you would want to apply to a flying school in Malaysia without physics as a private cadet pilot, you can do it as long as you have 5 credits in SPM. That's with English, Maths, and General Science included in your result slip. However, y if you would want to apply to the airlines as a cadet pilot, you'll need to have a higher result achievement especially in English, Math, Physics or General Science, which 2 more subjects higher than credit. You should go for the cadet pilot programme and try it out, don't hesitate. Follow your dreams! Best of luck!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! We did our class 1 medical and eye check after we've passed our final assessment successfully. So there's no requirement to do that beforehand unless you wanted to be sure that you're fully fit to fly, then you can do it yourself, there's no problem to that. It will cost about RM400 in total, the airline will not cover the medical fees for you, please keep that in mind. All the best!

    1. Hello! You can actually pursue your flight training immediately after SPM. But the waiting list to join the flying school is long, it's about 2 years. So my suggestion would be is that you should sit for the flying school assessments and interview and once you've passed it, you'll get to know approximately when your intake will be. If its about 2 years, then you should pursue something you like for example as you've mentioned, degree in aviation (ATC) which is very good! Because it helps in your actual flying, so you've got a good plan for it actually!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! For flying training, there's no waving of training fees at all, no scholarship or anything. So normally people will take up a personal loan from the bank which has a high interest rate naturally or self sponsor the fees on their own. Even we airline cadets have to finance our flight training fees that way. Its really expensive.

I decided to go for the Cadet Pilot Programme after i have finished my DIploma. Of course i'm worried about the fees and the medical requirements as well. Being a pilot has always been my passion since i was a kid. It would be great if you could reply to me. Best of luck to you!

  58. Hello, firstly I'm Wan. This career is the absolute dream since i was a child but because of financial problems. I took a far road, by pursuing diploma and then I thought maybe work with diploma then accumulate the budget to flying school. But then i figured out Diploma pay rate might not be enough. Then i pursue degree and now I'm imagining that maybe work with degree can solve my financial to still pursue the pilot career. But if you can help me, just by giving me information of is there any sponsorship to becoming a pilot in Malaysia.?

  59. Hello, today tony fernandez in an Instagram live with Sam chui was saying the cadet program is open to all citizens, they had Korean citizens too enrolled in the program even though their website says open to Malaysian citizens. Do you have any idea about it or have you met any citizen from other national during the selection processes? Also, what’s your status? Did you get through?

  60. Hi there, I completed SPM this year and entered matriculation. If I were to apply, should I use my matriculation results that I would hopefully get by next year or my spm results from this year? Also , how do I pay for the fees if I'm not exactly from a well to do background? I've been really keen on becoming a pilot but I don't think I'll be able to pay for the fees
